So. The eclipse happened.
I wasn’t planning to care, because around here you literally wouldn’t notice a damn thing even at 80% totality without slapping the glasses on your face and staring that fucker down. But a coworker unexpectedly gave me a pair of glasses, and then I had the afternoon off, so, down to the water I went.
And the thing is that, if you hang around staring at the sun during an eclipse, every motherfucker in a ten-mile radius who hasn’t been able to secure a pair of glasses will a) notice you and b) start doing the little drive-by peacock dance where they make it obvious they’re noticing you(r glasses) and would like you to officially notice them back just in case you might be willing to share.
Because this requires some interstitial human interaction establishing that they, too, are interested in the eclipse, and that you might be willing to tolerate their company, before they ask if they can perhaps borrow the glasses, or, better yet, receive the offer of a loan, I spent two hours unexpectedly caring a lot about the eclipse at complete randos.
