They moved on a little earlier than Belle would have liked that morning, but Rumple had insisted. She'd woken in his arms, under three more blankets than she'd fallen asleep with, and he’d told her in a sleepily gruff voice they should keep moving. What he didn’t say was that he didn’t like her lying on the forest floor in the frost, because that was the only reason for them to move on quickly. They had made good time the day before, after leaving the village near the Dark Castle.

Rumplestiltskin sat behind her in the saddle, as he always did, with his hands flat on her stomach holding her against him. His chest was pressed flush against her, and she thought with a smile that he didn’t need to try and share his heat with her, her blush was warming her up all by itself.

“It’ll be noon before we reach the next village,” she said, and he hummed in agreement. “And it’s only a little village. Smaller than the first, even.”

Everything was packed and ready long before it came time to leave.

Belle huffed as she struggled with her travel bag and bed roll down the many stairs of the Dark Castle. She hadn’t seen Rumple since he’d left their bed that morning, and she’d left him to whatever it was he was busy doing before they departed.

The idea of leaving didn’t feel as heavy now that she had his word they would return to the castle one day. She didn’t feel quite so uneasy at the thought of leaving all those books in the library, or her new clothes in their bedchamber. Not when they would return for them.

She found Rumple in the great hall, brushing his fingertips over the table in the way he used to check if she’d dusted while he’d been away.

Magic works just as well as any midwife. There are plenty of spells for checking on the health of my... On Belle and our child.

“Will there be anything else, Rumplestiltskin?”

She’d intended to tease him, but he looked her up and down so slowly, so dark and hungry, that Belle was more affected than he was.

She pressed her thighs together as he took a step closer, backing her into the table. She hopped up onto it without looking, and bumped the tea service with her behind. Everything clattered, and the little bowl of sugar toppled over, spilling the cubes across the table. Rumple gave her an amused smile at her clumsiness and Belle laughed, breaking character. She popped one of the little cubes between her lips and sucked on it. It was so sweet, almost too sweet, but it mixed pleasantly with the saltiness he’d left on her tongue and it was worth it to see Rumple's eyes fixate on her mouth.

“Now you have something else to clean,” he said, his voice so deep it was almost a growl. A heat pooled low in her stomach.

Belle took the cube from her mouth and nodded. “I’ll clean it up right away,” she said, proud that she hadn’t sounded as breathless as she felt.

She didn't want to leave.

In the week that followed, as Belle prepared herself for their journey to the queen's castle, the desire to stay only grew. The Dark Castle was theirs - hers and Rumple's - and she was loathe to leave that, even when she knew what lay beyond.

She’d spent that morning relaying Rumple’s plan to Robin and Red. Some of the men didn’t seem happy with having to pack up their camp quickly to leave in the night, but Robin and Red understood the need for secrecy. She’d sat with the two of them, and Robin’s son, and enjoyed a late breakfast before it was time to return to the castle.

That’s what was really on her mind as she rode Philippe back through the forest. Roland was such a sweet little boy, and she couldn’t help but wonder if her own child would be like that. Rumple and her still hadn’t really discussed it. There’d been fleeting moments where she’d caught him looking at her, or his hand would brush over her stomach as he sidestepped her to reach something on a shelf behind her.

The little glances and touches were all that made it real.
