Meet Lace!!

Lace is designed after Chain Coral fossils (suggested by a friend of mine). They’re meant to be small but elegant, though by Eridian standards they’re not that pretty.

Lace’s mate was on Blip-A too, as the youngest on it. They were sweethearts and deeply in love similar to Rocky and Adrian. So when Blip-A left, Lace and Adrian would hang out together and comfort each other while they waited. And waited. And waited.

Eventually the ship was determined to be a lost cause. Adrian went off to grieve silently as she does, and Lace started to collapse inward. They listened and waited and fought for the Eridians to find a way to bring the crew home. But nothing could be done was the response she heard a thousand times over.

Eventually, the Hail Mary comes into orbit, along with the news that an alien and a member of Blip-A were on board. For a few days, Lace had hope. And then the news spread that it was Rocky, and no one else from Blip-A had come home.

Lace was absolutely heartbroken, and it hurt worse when she got to see Adrian and Rocky, comforting each other, together after so many years. It took a while, but Rocky asked Lace if she wanted to know her mate’s last words and she shut him down.

After that, Lace became an outspoken critic against space travel, against Grace, everything to do with Blip-A. It saved them, but it took away her mate, it took away her hope. Now every day seemed dull and muffled and pointless unless she was starting arguments or trying to convince people to her side.

Slowly but surely, she became an instrument in her own destruction.

One day, long after Lace had thoroughly ruined her career, her political standing, her relationships, she finally decided to get help. An eridian therapist was first on that list to help her learn to cope better. They talked with her and the two worked together for a couple Eridian years until they suggested Lace go talk to Rocky and Adrian.

Lace was extremely upset by this, cut the meeting short, and almost relapsed into her self destructive ways before she finally decided she needed to do this. So she scheduled a meeting with them. Rocky was very, very hesitant to go and understandably so. But Adrian was more than happy to see her old friend trying to take care of themself and agreed.

The three met and it was awkward and uncomfortable as Lace tried to apologize without directly saying why she did what she did. Rocky barely could keep from yelling at her for being such a jerk towards him and Grace. And Adrian just listened.

Towards the end, Adrian asked Lace if she wanted to hear her mate’s final words. At first, Lace was extremely hesitant and almost wanted to ruin this so she wouldn’t have to think about it, but she made herself say yes.

Rocky was upset but he told her that Lace’s mate was one of the last ones to die, they held on for her. And their final words (that made sense) were about how they had hope that Erid would be okay, that lace would be okay, and how this mistake could help them learn to do better in the future.

This absolutely tore Lace about on the inside. That was how her mate spoke, but she just didn’t want to think about the fact they had seen their own death aa a stepping stone towards solving an impossible problem. Towards doing what Lace had been fighting against.

The talk ended soon after that and for awhile there it looked like Lace regressed, but by the next time she came out to thrum, Lace was doing better. She was fighting for figuring out how to protect eridians in space, how to help that alien that came here and learn about its home. She started to put that energy into something constructive and not let her grief and jealousy consume her anymore.

Adrian and Lace’s friendship never fully recovered, but the two stopped being on opposing sides and greet each other warmly instead of the formerly-commonplace ignorance and tendency to run.

Fun facts about her and Grace

Grace named her Lace because of her patterns, he thought they looked a lot like Lace.

Grace ends up getting along fairly well with Lace, though it’s not quite a friendship. More like a general agreement to occasionally talk about space travel and earth.

For this design he doesn’t have eyelids except for “second” eyelids that are see through so he can emote but he can’t ever stop seeing. The top right image is with his eyes as closed as they get and with his mouth open and tongue out so you can see all his mouth-parts :)

He can vocalize with his mouth as he still has vocal chords and can also make chittering sounds with his mandibles and rasping sounds with his wings, but he can’t talk (he tries tho)

...This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever made.

So last Saturday, after a long day of work and grocery shopping, I took a nap...where I proceeded to have a dream where Carter had long hair. And was hanging out with Ian for some reason. (Ignoring the fact that they're in different movies, why would they hang out? I haven't seen FD3 in ages, but I'm fairly sure Ian would've hated Carter.)

Anyway, long story short, the dream inspired me to make this. I haven't done digital art in a long while, so I apologize if this looks funky. Carter's hair isn't exactly long, but that was the longest I thought he would be willing to have. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would have hair past his shoulders. Now I have to consider balancing things out by drawing an FD character with short hair. Unfortunately, there's only one guy I'm aware of that has long hair in this franchise, and I know that his actor has rocked short hair before...and I'm rambling, so I'm gonna stop here.
