What’s the deal with Jacob and EBE-1?
Jacob’s official debut in the webcomic (RIP Brevis ;______;) has brought back a lot of questions I had regarding his relationship with EBE-1 when Rose and Fatima were discussing Jacob earlier on in the chapter. Was Brevis the first alien Jacob had ever seen? Or was he just the first alien Jacob perceived as dangerous? Fatima said that Jacob knew EBE-1, that they were “practically the best of friends.” However, Fatima seems to be more than a little bit ditzy, so it would be fair to take this statement with a grain of salt. Even if it turns out Jacob and EBE-1 were friends - as much as you can be friends with a Grey, EBE-1 in particular - this contradicts a huge aspect of EBE-1: his hatred for mankind. I don’t know about you, but being BFFs with a human doesn’t exactly scream “i hate teh human beanzz!!!” I suspect there was something about Jacob that made EBE-1 see him as “different” than other humans. What that something was - if it’s even true at all - remains to be seen.
Another big question mark is the identity of the person who asked EBE-1 to look after Rose. My guess is that it was her father. For one thing, Fatima’s abandonment of Jacob and Rose is what triggered Jacob’s drinking. Although I have a feeling that in itself is actually a cover-up for something far more gruesome. To me, it doesn’t make sense for Fatima to ask EBE-1, an unfeeling Grey, to keep an eye on her daughter if Jacob was still around. If EBE-1 hates humans so much, why did he bother looking out for a (half) human girl for most of her life? Because Jacob, the closest thing he ever had to a friend, asked him to as he was dying. Even the fact that Rose doesn’t seem as deeply traumatized by the Greys as Roger suggests she was treated “better” - and I use that word EXTREMELY loosely - during abductions. I’m probably giving EBE-1 too much credit, but that’s my two cents.
Side note: even if EBE-1 did look out for Rose all those years, I wonder if he’s bitter towards her. (Or whatever the Grey version of that is) Bitter that she’s alive and Jacob is not.
