During my first semester at college back in the mid-2000's, I had an alarm clock that I had set to play "The Imperial March" at 7am every morning. Now, my roommate had never seen Star Wars. A few weeks into the semester some of her friends decided to fix this and held a Star Wars movie marathon. She fell asleep towards the end of "A New Hope." A bit later during "Empire Strikes Back," she woke up in a panic thinking it was 7am the next morning when "The Imperial March" started playing.
Hahahaha, wow, thatās hilarious. I wonder if the music haunts her to this day. Vaderās Theme struck fear into the hearts of Imperials. It just makes your roommate think sheās late for Psych.Ā
My roommate and I had a VHS box set of the original trilogy in our dorm room, because we were Very Cool, clearly. (As it happens, there was no box set of the PT in our room, because I am Old and the PT wasnāt actually done being released yet...)
earthzero replied to your post āsometimes I feel like I should find a way to be super up front about...ā
@veliseraptorā Same. I have some unpopular opinions about some popular characters, and, well, mostly I just don't say anything because I don't want to ruin anyone else's fun.
yeah, this...is generally what I try to do as an overall policy, but sometimes - idk, I really want to vent, or really feel like I need to express an opinion or talk about something thatās bothering me.Ā
and then itās a fight betweenĀ ādo I want to complain about the thing more than I want to possibly have to deal with people getting upset at meā
but yeah, this is more or less why I have the #liseās aggressively bitchy opinions about irrelevant and unimportant matters tag, because, well. sometimes I just gotta.
earthzero mentioned you in a post
@praximeterā Thank you! I thought it was super clever when I wrote it. I don't actually swear much in real life, so writing characters who do (Watney, Steve, and Bucky, mostly) is hard, because the speaking pattern doesn't come naturally to me.

LOL, I swear to god like half my vocabulary comprises various permutations ofĀ āfuck.ā I mean, I am from Boston, so maybe Iām just like, several standard deviations out from the norm? ššš
Never have I ever ... written a High School AU.
I have!
Grand Slam
Steve is a first baseman who scored three grand slams last season.
Bucky is the second-highest scorer on the Scholastic Bowl Team.
Yet, somehow Steveās the one who canāt get Bucky to see that he exists.

Holy cow, the Deathbike is intense! I hope Steve is feeling better after the concussion! And I hope your nerves are calming down after what must have been an unsettling day. It seems bikes are out of the question, too. How about roller skates? How much damage could Steve possibly do on a pair of roller skates?
the concussion was totally gone by the time he woke up. superhealing has its perks. my nerves, however, are in a constant state ofĀ āSTEVE NO,ā which my therapist describes as āenough to drive anybody batshit.ā
after the Deathbike incident, we decided that steve canāt use anything with wheels. just to be safe. and then he went out for a walk and accidentally stumbled into and broke up a drug smuggling ring.Ā
so now weāve just given up entirely.
earthzero replied to your post: omg people... what is a prompt?
⦠So, āThe Avengers meet the Addams Familyā is clearly a prompt. Is āBucky is recovering and having nightmares of taking revenge on Hydra. Then an ex-Hydra agent dies after claiming he was being haunted. Bucky thinks itās not a coincidence.ā a prompt or a summary? On the one hand, yes, thereās a lot of detail there. On the other hand, itās really open-ended; there are a lot of directions someone could take that story. Could someone advise, please?
Both are prompts - oneās just a little more detailed than the other one.Ā And, see, for me, Iād be all over the first prompt because thereās a LOT of room for me to work and create, but the second one has enough detail in it that it might spark another writer who needs a little more in the way of an outline or structure.Ā What you donāt want to do is this (and this is only an example Iāve pulled out of my ass and only working on my first cup of coffee, so bear with me :D):
Post-TWS, Bucky is recovering in Avengers Tower and goes jogging with Steve and Sam every morning in Central Park. There, they come upon a homeless vet who Sam recognizes as a friend of a friend from another unit...but so does Bucky, because he killed the vetās entire unit on a Winter Soldier mission. Sam wants to help the vet get back on his feet, and is pissed off and hurt when Bucky wants nothing to do with Samās efforts.Ā In fact, Bucky starts avoiding Sam altogether.Ā Steve is also upset, and canāt figure out why Bucky doesnāt want to help a fellow soldier, but Buckyās too terrified to say anything to Steve about his reasons - he doesnāt want to remind Steve of his dark past or for Steve to decide that Buckyās not worth saving. Lots of misunderstandings and PTSD flashbacks and H/C please.
Okay, so, hereās me as a writer looking at this āpromptā - my first thought is, why isnāt the prompter just writing it themselves, because they clearly have a very specific idea about the story and the direction of it and the plot and the emotional arc of the characters. My second thought is, well, you just told me the entire story, so not only do I not want to write it, I donāt even need to READ it.Ā
Now, letās take that same premise and turn it into a prompt:
Post-TWS - Bucky comes face to face with his past as the Winter Soldier when Sam starts mentoring a vet who has a connection to Buckyās time with Hydra.
Thereās a lot more wiggle room in that prompt for the writer to work with there.Ā And thatās the difference.Ā Itās not that the first one is bad - itās just that if you want that particular fic, then thatās a commission, not a prompt. :)
Hope this helps!
Could you answer number 17, please? "If you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?" P.S. I would love to read the Sebastian/Bucky swap story if you ever got around to writing it. :-D
Sure! (and yay! eventually Iāll get around to that story! itās on the List! at some point!)
17 - advice for my fledgling author self?
Oh, letās see⦠for the VERY young me, the me who was tentatively sticking a toe into Supernatural fandom (this was back around season four, for context), Iād say: donāt be scared to put your work out there! Everyone here is here because they love this thing too, and theyāll want to read your words no matter what, at least SOMEONE will, because they love the thing and because fans love each other - itās like an inherent support group!
For slightly older me: plan big fics better, darn it! Iām thinking about fics like Pineapple Revolution or the Cherik werewolf fic, which just, likeā¦got stuck at about 2/3 done, largely because of things Iād set up wrong or failed to set up properly and only later realized that I needed. (This also kind of happened with lovebirds, in Evanstan-land.) And that doesnāt have to be, like, super-detailed outlines, but even just a few minutes of thinking ahead (am I going to need to get them out of the palace? there should be a way to do that) wouldāve helped, in some cases.
For me at any stage: be brave about writing. Try new things. Donāt be shy about talking to other authors. Theyāre all here doing this too, out of love. :-)
