Earthworm Alchemy has been launched on 2015 successfully. Since we’re back, we plan to share the devlog of the games that we’ve made and are making. So, here’s the visual evolution of Earthworm Alchemy. Have you tried it yet?
Digging through early concept stuff is always fun, often moreso for those who weren't around at the time. It's like following a breadcrumb trail in reverse. So here's some of that, please enjoy! Also the first one is pure gold. "I can see in your eyes, you want to be the tallest, most beautiful worm in the world. You are in luck! I am the Wormerchant, and I travel around the world to fulfill dreamers like you!" - the Wormerchant, 2014
Also we'll be adding some more stuff to the blog soon, so stay tuned! In the meantime, here's Charlie spinning.
Hype!

Our last two weeks were mostly spent on testing Earthworm Alchemy and catching up on office chores. We also cleaned up some of the older asset files and found early background concepts/color schemes. While these were fairly rough, you can easily tell how big a shift we made early on. Despite the changes, they still look pretty on their own though.
When we were working on the logo for Earthworm Alchemy our artist decided to design a poster as well, so this week we got him to share some thoughts on the process. Hope you enjoy!
Hello people, this is qugoid. I came on board later in development and worked on design stuff for Earthworm Alchemy such as the logo mentioned earlier. When I first played an early demo of EA, I was immediately struck by its quirky cuteness, which reminded me of obscure Japanese NES games where internal logic didn't require much coherency. It made me chuckle. So when I finished up the logo I asked for time to work on a poster, which was an opportunity to bring out the warmth that I felt was a big part of the games "character". To do that, I looked at old game box art that mainly used photographs of hand crafted scenes, it's something you almost never see in games today and hopefully has the added bonus of standing out in the current ocean of slick, minimalist visuals. While the whole process of making the model and building the scene took much longer than what a digital illustration would've taken, I was pretty happy with the results, and I hope you all like it too!
As we've mentioned earlier, this is our upcoming title, Earthworm Alchemy. It's a goofy game about magical, reality-defying worms, so when we designed the logo we wanted to capture that lighthearted feel, while highlighting the whimsical combination of words through letterforms. It took us a few drafts to reach the final version, but we're quite happy with it. Hope you all like it!
