The first time I heard “Pay To Cum,” I wasn’t exactly sure what had happened. I immediately knew two things for sure; I loved whatever it was and I needed more. I bought my first copy of the ROIR cassette at Sound Exchange in Wayne, New Jersey. That copy broke and I bought this copy about a year later (1983 or 1984). It is still the solid red shell but with the full yellow flood for the spine. The original case is long gone. Pre-recorded cassettes suck so I would transfer them to Maxells. My obsession has never waned and this is a great soundtrack for my bike ride to work. “Rock For Light” shares many of the tracks with the tape but greatly benefit from the newly recorded versions. I have always wanted to hear the re-issued, re-mixed version which is pitched slightly faster for some insane reason. (The demo session, “Black Dots,” recorded in 1979 contains many of the same tracks as the tape and “Rock For Light.” Bad Brains are a band. There is no stand out member because each member is integral to the sound. For the June edition of First Thursday we are joined by drummer Brian Kantor so I am putting the spotlight on Earl. Original a Fusion band called, Mind Power, they renamed themselves, “Bad Brains,” after the Ramones song the stage was set to change the world. At the recording sessions for, “Pay To Cum,” HR asked brother Earl to, "make it groovy” and depending on your definition of that word I think he achieved that and a whole lot more. By the end of that 1:33 song Hardcore was born. His desire to play as fast as possible and ability to keep it in the pocket, set an unobtainable standard. Earl sits atop the throne for good reason.
