Freshman year of college sucks. Andrew is lucky that he doesnāt have to take many class besides English and social studies⦠Heād managed to test out of most science and math courses for reasons heād rather attribute to his dad than his past. But the homework is just as much of a drag as elementary school and homeschool had been.Ā
The transit isnāt great either. He takes a public bus to and from campus, getting to the stop using a portal set to open just a dozen feet away. Teleporting into school would bring up way too many questions. Itās a long ride, an hour each way, but the time lets him study and listen to music, and Andrew never runs into any creeps even though his stop is the last one before the bus turns around.
Heād gotten too comfortable. Not as alert as he used to be, jumping at shadows, not used to being around so many people. It was a rough class, a late night, and he was too focused on his music and thoughts of homework he had to finish at home.Ā
So Andrew didnāt notice the trenchcoat guy in the back of the bus had stayed on until the end of the line. And he didnāt notice that heād followed him off.
The autumn woods are full of the sounds of nightlife, nocturnal animals like raccoons and owls and mice rustling the leaves. A few extra heavy footsteps behind him simply join the white noise heās grown used to hearing beyond his music.Ā
āHey, kid.ā
Just more white noise. Andrew shifts his purple scarf, guarding his mouth against the cold. Preoccupied with his bright phone, busy trying to reconnect after a sudden signal loss, his eyes are not adjusted to the dark around him and he doesnāt sense the presence getting closer and closer.Ā
āKid.ā
The music cuts off abruptly as one of his earbuds is yanked from his ear. Immediately alarmed, Andrew whips around, already pulling back his fist for a punch. But before he can throw it, the man grabs the scarf around his neck and yanks Andrewās head down, with the stranger bringing up his knee to meet it.Ā
Alarms flash across his vision as his back hits the ground, and Andrew can tell oil is leaking from his nose. Before he can recover and stand, thereās a strong pressure on his chest, directly atop his adaptium power core⦠a foot. Much heavier than it should be for a human that size. A couple tugs and it doesnāt budge - in fact, Andrewās hands phase through the manās pants⦠and⦠legs⦠until they touch metal.Ā
His artificial breathing is constricted by the scarf, the damage alerts in the corner of his vision still flashing. An SOS signal sent to home - to Eclipse, to Solar Flare, to Charlie, to anyone - bounces back, unsent. Something is blocking his communications.Ā
The stranger just stares down at Andrew. āRecognize me?ā
He doesnāt. No. Scruffy beard, long hair. The man looks and sounds like no one in his memory banks, as far as he can tell from a brief search. All his energy is being used to break freeā¦. or attempt to. One hand pushes at the leg keeping him pinned while the other is scrabbling to pull the scarf away from his neck. He looks up at his attacker, meeting the strangerās orange⦠eyes. Orange? Why would they be orange? He canāt⦠focusā¦
The man seems displeased with the lack of a verbal answer, wrapping the scarf tighter around his hand and lifting Andrewās head up off the ground. The teenās hands both pull on the scarf, trying to relieve the feeling of suffocation - he doesnāt need to breathe, but itās distracting and it hurts.Ā
āLetās try again,ā the man growls, and his voice changes midway through the words. He sounds like⦠like Eclipse. And his face⦠it flickers and disappears, revealing a metal one hiding behind it.Ā
An illusion disc? Andrew thinks. He can tell his own has already failed, shattered under the endoskeletonās foot. His more robotic features are clearly visible.Ā
It doesnāt matter.Ā
The Mimic knows exactly what and who he is.Ā
It tilts its head at him and the stolen human face flickers back on, a sadistic grin plastered there. Its voice goes back to the one he doesnāt recognize. āOhh, looks like you do remember me! After five years I was worried you wouldnāt.ā It releases the scarf and Andrewās head slams back onto the ground. More damage alerts.Ā
Andrewās systems register that he can ābreatheā again, though, and he is able to speak. āYou⦠controlled Dad and hurt Jake,ā he spits, glaring up at the Mimic. āāCourse I remember you.āĀ
āHm, true.ā It drops its grin, looking unimpressed. āBut Iām here for you. You know why, right?āĀ
Andrew searches his memory again. Times he and the Mimic had interacted, reasons itād be mad at him personally⦠Oh. Right. Heād identified the imposter immediately, managed to plant seeds of doubt in Puppetās mind about āEclipse,ā and escaped the Mimicās attempted exorcism. Then the⦠not so kind exchanges theyād had while the Mimic was trapped in Eclipseās lab, preventing Charlie or Roxy from opening the podā¦Ā
He just chooses to nod.
The Mimic sighs. āI could just kill you here. And I do want to.ā It puts more of its weight on the leg on Andrewās chest; metal creaks and he can feel an uncomfortable pressure on his core, a phantom touch to match on his very soul. āBut Iām not really here for revenge, even if this will do the trick. Iām here to cash in a bounty on you.āĀ
A bounty? The Overseer had assured their whole extended family that he and any others to assume the role wouldnāt attempt anything like that again. So it had to be someone else. Who would have it out for him? It wouldnāt be Foxy or Monty. Could FC have done this as a prank, without thinking of the consequences? Another SOS comes back unsent. Panic starts to set in.
āWeeeell,ā the Mimic continues, ānot exactly on you. I could always grab your little brothers instead, and they are Plan B, butā¦ā Its voice changes again, this time to a voice Andrew had hoped to never hear again. His killerās. His Creatorās. āThe remnants of the Council would rather not start C14 from scratch.ā
With a kick to the head, Andrewās vision fills with errors and then he sees nothing at all.

I KNOW that Roxanne agreed to home school his kids but it still pissed me off a bit that she actually tried backing out of doing him this one favor he asked of her and that he had to keep pushing her to do it. When MOST of the time she's done nothing but sit and stare.
As for Flare, oh good! He's alive and well.
As for Mimic. I'm wondering what they did to them. And that other Bonnie they had.
