"In 1967, the USSR would reveal what seemed to be a new superfighter, setting off alarm bells across the western world. If the Soviets' claims were true, there was no fighter in the U.S. arsenal that could consistently counter the MiG-25 Foxbat, if any could at all. With the East and West locked in a struggle for air superiority, it seemed that the Soviet Union was winning. Faced with the prospect of being outclassed in the skies, the United States would respond by engineering the greatest fighter aircraft in History."
