E30 Petrol India: Will It Affect Your Car's Mileage and Engine?
India's petrol is changing again.
After E20 became mandatory in April 2025, the government has already moved to the next step, E30 petrol (30% ethanol mixed with 70% petrol). BIS has notified the standards, excise duty has been waived, and the roadmap is clear.
Here's what it actually means for you:
Your car compatibility: Cars bought after 2023 are most likely fine. Cars bought before 2020Â may see rubber seal wear and mileage drop over time
Mileage impact: E20 already drops mileage by 2-4%. E30 will drop it a little more, around 4–6%. But if the price per litre drops too, your monthly fuel bill may stay the same
Will it be cheaper?: No official price yet, but the excise duty waiver and the E85 pilot (already ₹20/litre cheaper than E20) strongly suggest the government wants higher blends to be affordable
When is E30 coming to pumps?: Not yet, E20 is still the standard at all fuel stations todayWhat should you do right now?: Check your owner's manual for the max ethanol blend supported, ask your dealer if your engine is E30-ready, and if you're buying a new vehicle, ask for flex-fuel options.
