it had all happened so fast, vivi hardly had a chance to process what was going on. she had seen others go through the ceremony plenty of times throughout her life in the lighthouse, but it felt unfamiliar as she stood on the platform, palms sweating and heart racing. it seemed as though she’d never considered the possibility of actually changing during terrigenesis until the day was upon her. viv barely had time to think as the mist flooded the air around her and she was cocooned in stone. panic took over but just as quickly as it came on, the stone shattered and fell away. 

she instinctually sought out her mother’s eyes but was only able to hold her gaze for a few moments before a hand wrapped around her bicep and led her away. she didn’t have the energy to protest and she knew nothing good would come out of resisting anyway, so she followed silently as she was led through halls and down levels. as far as she could tell she didn’t look any different, but did she feel any different? she couldn’t figure out the answer to that one before she was stopped in her tracks. her surroundings were unfamiliar and she could only guess they’d arrived at their destination as her escort released her and left without a word. as she scanned the room, she realized she wasn’t alone. there was another boy there already, presumably from a level that performed the ceremony before hers. 

                he   never   would   have   thought   they   would   be   here   right   now   ,   standing   in   the   middle   of   some   random   frat   party   ,   trying   to   track   anyone   down   ,   but   especially   not   ori     .   this   didn’t   feel   right   .   but   truly   ,   there’s   a   lot   of   things   that   didn’t   make   sense   since   he   &   viv   came   back   to   their   apartment   after   class   &   found   all   signs   of   ori   gone   .   it   didn’t   make   any   sense   when   they   both   bombarded   him   with   calls   &   texts   trying   to   figure   out   what   was   going   on     (     benji   wondered   for   a   moment   if   they   had   been   robbed   or   evicted   &   only   ori   got   hit      )   only   to   see   the   notifications   that   their   messages   could   not   be   sent    .

                they   both   spotted   him   plenty   of   times   after   that   on   campus   ,   only   for   him   to   ignore   them   when   one   called   out   ,   or   make   a   quick   escape   if   one   of   them   tried   to   follow   .   but   it   made   even   less   sense   when   viv   came   home   one   day   to   share   that   she   heard   ori   had   gone   to   join   a   fraternity     .

              he   turns   his   head   to   look   for   viv   in   the   stands   as   parents   collected   their   items   .   he   had   left   while   she   was   still   asleep   ,   but   he   knew   she   would   come   before   the   first   half   of   the   game   was   even   over   .   she   usually   did   .      benji   sports   her   ,   sunglasses   &   leggings   &   looking   like   she   was   still   tired   .   he   couldn’t   blame   her   though   .   if   it   wasn’t   for   the   early   game    ,   he   would   have   stayed   up   with   her   drinking   .   he   really    wishes   he    could     .

             benji   starts   waving   of   his   players   as   they   met   up   with   their   parents   ,   letting   them   know   he   would   see   them   at   practice   on   tuesday   .     he   wants   nothing   more   than   to   go   home   with   viv   &   take   his   hair   out   of   its   bun    .    as   the   last   of   the   players   leaves   the   field   ,   benji   starts   walking   up   the   bleachers   to   meet   viv   ,   smile   on   his   face     .      “      i   don’t   know   if   you   saw   it   ,   but   we   made   a   total   comeback   in   the   second   ha   ---     ”    

              he   stops   speaking   as   he   stops   on   the   level   just   in   front   of   her   .   he’s   looking   over   her   shoulder   to   the   other   side   of   the   park   ,   one    more   shaded   with   tall   trees   .    there’s   a   man   standing   among   the   trees   ,   eyes   fixed   on   them   .   on   him   .   benji   squints   ,   tilts   his   head   ,   trying   to   focus   .   why   was   he   so    familiar   -------
