This is the new song I was talking about yesterday. I’m very happy/surprised I actually finished it. I almost gave up on it so many times today. A ridiculous number of times.

This took me a month to make because I would play what little I wrote over and over again, not have any idea what to do next, and then just go back to browsing the internet. It got to a point where, like most of the music I work on, I was committed to just never completing it. I stuck with it, however, and I’m really glad I did.

It’s really easy to get down when you’re doing creative work. I have over 200 project files for music. Most of them are just a measure or two, some of them are half of a song, and a couple are 80% done. I have maybe 10 songs that I consider complete. It’s real easy to look at those numbers and get down. But I have 10 songs! That’s 10 more than 0. As for the other 190 files, I can still complete those, as long as I don’t give up on them. And even if I don’t think they’re particularly good or worth it, it was still worthwhile to work on them because I learned something and it helped me improve my skills.

I don’t think I’m that good at making music, but I’m getting better every day. Creative work takes time and effort and a lot of the time it results in something you’re not happy with, but if you keep at it you’ll produce work that’s up to your standards. And it feels fucking great when you do.

I know I’m not saying anything new. This is all been said a million times before and a lot more eloquently, but sometimes hearing it again is the motivation you need to finish that project, whatever it is.
