What is the difference between Dynamic Rope and Static?
We get it: You're about to buy your first climbing rope and we know how intimidating it can be. Don't worry, because we're here to explain the differences between the two types of rope. You definitely want to pay attention here, because you NEVER want to take a fall on static rope.
Dynamic:
This type of rope stretches given a load of designated weight to minimize and absorb the impact of a fall. They can be utilized in lead climbing for protection, in rappelling, and moving gear. The downside is that these activities tend to wear them down faster. These Maxim ropes are great examples of dynamic rope.
Static:
Unlike their dynamic counterpart, static ropes do not stretch under a weight or load. Static ropes are best used for rappelling and moving gear. NEVER use static ropes for lead climbing. It does not stretch, and therefore it will either give you whiplash like no other, or it will break - potentially injuring or killing you. Check out these New England static ropes for a better idea.
Keep in mind what you want to use your climbing rope for and choose accordingly. Have fun out there and be safe!
