In his pride, Aerion had ultimately set in motion, a disaster so large, that generations of his house– the same house he so wished to protect– would suffer the consequences for years into the future.
His father had it in him to be the greatest King since Aegon the Dragon. And with Maekar by his side, they would've been unstoppable. Surely, his parents would've been the ones to return the dragons to House Targaryen.
And now, in a fit of arrogance and anger, he'd ruined their chances. He'd failed his family.
All for a hedge knight he'd fallen for. An oaf who wouldn't bow to him and so intrigued him, that he couldn't see past the fact that Ser Duncan was honorable, and would have bent the knee had Aerion only asked.
