Jamie Dornan: Actor pays tribute to late dad as he receives honorary degree from Queen’s
The star of The Tourist has come back to Northern Ireland to be honoured as an honorary graduate at the university his late father attended.
Co Down actor Jamie Dornan has been awarded a Doctorate for distinction in the arts at Queen’s University, Belfast.
The Holywood man is the recipient of two Irish Film and Television Awards and has also been nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award.
His father Professor Jim Dornan passed away aged 73 in 2021 after contracting Covid in Dubai, but Jamie could not see him because he was in Australia to film The Tourist.
The retired obstetrician and gynaecologist had considered a career in acting before turning to medicine, but he later had small parts in The Fall, in which Jamie played serial killer Paul Spector, and the third series of Marcella, starring Anna Friel.
Speaking at the Queen’s ceremony, Jamie said: “It’s a huge honour. My dad went to this university, there are pictures in my house of my dad wearing a similar robe. I’m very proud to be involved in this great university.”
