BERWICK CHURCH: whilst museums and galleries are still closed it was a treat to pop in to see the murals and decorations by the Bloomsbury Group in this Sussex church near @charlestontrust yesterday morning. Painted during World War II by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, and Quentin Bell as a commission from Bishop Bell of Chichester, the murals form an extraordinary decorative scheme: like an Italian chapel in the South Downs. A programme of restoration funded by @heritagefunduk and other donors has recently been completed to preserve the paintings, and improve environmental conditions in the church, including conservation of the paintings, lighting, flooring and a general redecoration, so the church is looking much brighter than I remember. #berwick #bloomsburygroup #interiors #vanessabell #duncangrant #quentinbell #berwickchurch @berwickchurchsussex (at Berwick Church) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNrWGh0lpt5/?igshid=193894pbo83fe

At the Ballet Duncan Grant Detail from his c1937 lithograph for the Contemporary Lithograph series to which Vanessa Bell also contributed. It was possibly the first of many efforts to provide 'good' contemporary illustration for classrooms and nurserys. As with the A.I.A.
