I absolutely fell in love with both the book and the movie Dumplin’. Willowdean Dickson, daughter of a former pageant queen, is comfortable being exactly herself in all of her self-proclaimed fat girl glory. But when she discovers that her late-aunt felt unwelcome in the pageant that her sister won, she decides to take a stand and enter the Teen Bluebonnet Pagent herself.

With the help of an unlikely group of friends and some beautiful Dolly Parton drag queens, Willowdean feels closer to her aunt, begins to connect with her mother, and learns how to love herself. “There’s nothing in the rules that says big girls need not apply.”

The book was more detailed than the movie and had some different plots, but I think the movie did an excellent job at capturing the spirit of the book. Now I need to go read the sequel Puddin’ and listen to more Dolly Parton!
