I've honestly always wanted to really get into Final Fantasy 14 but for such a social game, I don't want to play it all by myself, and I'd need to have friends who also played it
I just started playing genshin impact and very quickly realized Chinese fans and English-speaking fans are suffering from a major case of miscommunication due to poor translation of "sworn-brothers." This is not a pro-incest post~ this is an attempt at explaining the nuance of a term in Chinese drama/pop-culture that has been Lost in translation:
The term: "sworn brothers" was mistranslated to brothers. The closest thing we have to "sworn brother" in the English language is "matelotage" essentially a pact of property between sailors through a VERY close, historically gay relationship. (Please look up the word online for a better explanation)
Pop culture nuance: Due to censorship issues in China the term "sworn brothers" has become a short-hand for gay couples in modern Chinese dramas~ as reference please look at "the untamed"- series on Netflix and similar titles.
Genshin Impact: Yes Diluc and Kaeya are adopted sibling (a trope often used in this genre.) As adults they have entered into a "sworn brothers" pact, which is currently how gay couples are represented in Chinese dramas /pop-culture to get around anti-lgbt media censorship. I am sure Diluc and Kaeya have/will have other relationships in game. For lgbt-Chinese fans and English speaking fans-aware of this phenomenon, "sworn-brothers" is as close to a gay couple as they can get to~ due to censorship issues.
hope that clears things up.
