I've always wanted a doberman, but the sensitivity to the cold thing really held me back. Is it that bad? I love to go out into the snow with my dogs, and we get some pretty horrible winters here.
I’m not really sure where you’re located, but yes, dobes are sensitive to the cold (and wet). There’s a reason Creed has a coat on in many of his outdoor pictures during the winter!
How sensitive depends entirely on the dog. I know dobes that are gigantic weenies and will shiver in anything under 40F. I know dobes that, with a coat, will go out and have tons of fun in 4ft of snow and subzero temperatures. My last doberman Skoll did not seem to mind the colder weather so long as it wasn’t freezing rain, but I did still put him in cold weather gear and he seemed to appreciate it. Creed definitely appreciates any buffer I can give him once it hits 10F or lower, but will try his hardest otherwise.
I know someone who lives in the mid/northern reaches of Canada and has a doberman. She seriously decks him out in coat, boots, and snood... but he still can go outside and run or play in her winters.
