A dirty window air conditioner can cause a multitude of issues such as an increase in the likelihood of diseases, dust issues which damage indoor air quality and a jump in your electricity bill as well. Depending on where you live and how much you use your air conditioner, cleaning is a part of a completely normal maintenance cycle and has to be done at some point to prevent mold. Fortunately, cleaning your window air conditioner is an easy task and requires no more than items present in almost every household. Carry on reading for a complete guide on how to get your window AC clean in no time.Â
Here is a list of items you will need before we begin:Â
A bucket of mild soap or detergent water
Several clean pieces of clothÂ
A spray bottle with a few drops of bleach (3% Hydrogen Peroxide)
A philips and flathead screwdriver
A brush with soft bristles
Disconnect your window AC from the wall.
STEP 2: CLEANING THE FILTER
Simply remove the front panel of your air conditioner and remove the air filter from its brackets.
Proceed to wash it with warm, soap water to remove all dust and debris. Let is soak for awhile as well and proceed to the third step.
Use the time your filter soaks and dries to clean the exterior and the grill of your window AC.
Use a wet cloth to wipe down the front panels and the grills.
Once it is clean, use a dry cloth to dry them as well.
Make sure the exterior is completely dry before you run your air conditioner again.Â
STEP 4: CLEANING THE COILS
Once you remove the front grills, the fins and coils of your window AC should be visible towards the inside.
Use the brush, and very gently, remove all the dust from the coils. Do not be hasty as they are made of aluminum and bend very easily.
If any are bent, you can gently nudge them back in place.
For hard to reach places, you can also use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the fins.
The last stage of cleaning involves removing your window air conditioner’s drip tray.
You can clean it with a wet cloth to clean out the debris.
Make sure you leave it to dry before you reassemble the air conditioner.
Once all the components of your air conditioner have completely dried, it is time to stick it back together.
Spray the various points of air flow with your 3% hydrogen peroxide to prevent mold from growing.Â
You can then confidently reinstall the tray, the filters then the exterior grill without worrying about mildew.
