du-buk replied to your post āWhat are some of your favorite horror movies?ā
Midsommar is one of my favorites! When you get the chance to finish it, I would def recommend the directorās other horror film Hereditary
Iāve been curious about that one, too!Ā There seems to be a wave of good horror movies coming out lately, which is a very good thing.
This must be a mess/headache for you, so sorry about that. On the subject of story telling for rpg (horror) goes, how do you think you should balance ambiance/ambiguity and story telling (personally)? I want to be vague in my game, but not too vague where it's painfully boring/confusing but I also don't want to be super obvious. Thanks and I wish you best of luck <3
ugh i accidentally closed the window on my first response to this sdkfjsfsĀ
((This is an older ask, so the thing that Du-buk talked about is over and no one has to worry about it. Ā And thank you, that was sweet. c: Ā Sorry for the late response!!! ))
What I think personally? Ā I think no matter what you do, there will be someone who doesnāt get it. Ā Like, you could leave a big neon sign to what it is without outright stating it, and someone out there will still miss it or misinterpret it. Ā Itās unavoidable imo. Ā That being said, I donāt like to underestimate the audience either! Ā I like to guess that my audience is as smart as I am, and try to see the thing Iām developing from the playerās perspective if possible. Ā I try to remove the clues I left behind from the game and place them together in my mind. Ā If theyāre too ambiguous, Iāll add another. Ā If itās too easy to figure out, Iāll either make one or two more obtuse or remove one. Ā Thatās not an easy thing to gauge, so Iād grab me an alpha tester or five and see how they get it. Ā Itās a ok if one of them doesnāt get it of course (since youāre being vague), but if you feel like none of them came close then yeah.
Iād also decide what parts of the story I want to be vague and what I want to be concrete. Ā Do I want to make sure that the audience knows which events go in order, and number/date journal entries or events somehow? Ā Or do I want them to try and guess it for themselves? Ā If something bad happened in a characterās backstory, is it better for the player to imagine it or for me to tell them what it was? Ā Leaving wiggle room for interpretation is always fun, but there are always things you want to be concrete on. Ā Thatās up to you to decide!
I think the best way to keep your players engaged in the story is to give them a goal & a mystery to solve and go from there. Ā Like, Amnesia told playersĀ āhey itās your past self I gave you amnesiaā (which gets players invested in whatās going on) andĀ ādo me a solid and kill this guy for me, thanksā (an in-game goal for players to know what theyāre doing). Ā Otherwise, you keep your players entertained the same way you would in other games: interesting characters, neat places to explore, fun game mechanics, puzzles that arenāt too simple but arenāt too hard, etc.. If youāre a story based game you might not have all of those of course, but yeah! Ā Get an alpha tester or two and haveĀ āem tell you what they think of things. Ā
Hoped this helped in some way. Ā Sorry if the answer leaves you with more questions, itās a subjective topic to talk about so thereās multiple answers (ironic in a sense!). Ā And sorry about the late reply!
