none of the games go into any kind of explanation for where the necromorph virus actually originates from or why it exists as it does (to some degree they don't really need to bc i believe the root cause of humanity's desperation and suffering in this universe and the whole reason the events kicked off on aegis 7 is still just capitalism lol) but the introduction of the tau volantians in dead space 3 suggested to me an idea that maybe the necromorphs are a biological weapon of some kind. tau volantis was flash-frozen and stayed that way for many many years to halt the creation of another brother moon using all of the inhabitants' biomass and that kind of time makes me think that maybe the necromorph virus has loooong since fulfilled its initial purpose, whatever that might have been. there were several brother moons shown at the end of awakened (if you are to believe that was a real thing isaac and carver were witnessing and not just further marker-signal induced hallucinations, cus i'm the last person who wants to take "REAL game ending locked behind a $15 DLC that was an hour long" seriously lmfao), implying several other worlds had already been infested and destroyed. interesting to imagine that maybe the virus has been self-perpetuating for however many long years--many, many long millennia, probably, and that it will keep doing so until there's absolutely nothing left for it to consume. i don't enjoy the idea that the necromorphs are the result of some kind of intelligent design (as in some providential force), or is truly intelligent itself, i believe that the idea that it is in actuality an artificially-created organism fulfilling a purpose without cause or reason to its own end to be much more harrowing. all that death and destruction and desolation for no real end goal. once all the brother moons are created what will be left? what is it supposed to do after that? it won't be able to keep perpetuating itself because it'll have killed everything. there'll be nothing left but dead space
