Sometimes, Castiel wondered how his future self always seemed so...collected when he visited him. Not so much as if he looked like he was happy, but he had a presence about him that seemed to suggest he didn’t care. That nothing could affect him anymore.
Every time he heard about the latest news of what Dean had said, or about the amount of victories Lucifer had had, he couldn’t help, but wonder if the other genuinely didn’t feel like before. How did he not feel the guilt? How did he not feel the heavy slap of every insult from someone he’d called his friend? The man no longer resembled one that Castiel would have called his friend...
His answer came one day when he appeared in the other’s cabin, by now used to not knocking with how he sometimes came in here. He expected the other to be asleep, but instead... It took him a moment to realize the other was not only awake, but his shoulders shook. “Castiel? Are you alright?”, he asked, coming closer only to stiffen when he saw the tears running down his cheeks. He wasn’t sure how to react, staring at his future self a moment longer before tentatively wiping the tear away. “What happened?”
