Hi! I very recently got a male budgie who is about 9 weeks old. He has a little bath that we keep fresh water in, but he hasn't bathed in it or taken any interest. Is that something he has to learn? Will observing my finches in the cage next to his help? I also haven't seen him drink any water in the days we've had him and I'm concerned.

They won’t bathe for the first little while as doing so puts them in a very vulnerable position and they are currently terrified of their environment, you likely won’t be seeing him drink but he will be drinking, drinking also puts them in a vulnerable position since they don’t trust you they’ll tend to drink when you’re not around. As long as the droppings are good, he’s fine.

They get a lot of fluid through fresh foods like sprouts and fruits but they should still be drinking regularly from a water dish by scooping water up in their beak and tipping their heads back. If your bird is not actively drinking you may want to get them seen by a vet as they can become easily dehydrated and there may be an underlying cause for this.

How to get birds more interested in water

Other things that may help drinking specifically is soaking seeds, soaking pellets, or placing fresh foods in shallow water and replacing it once they’re done eating. Letting a water drop hang off your finger and let them drink that way as well as showing them where the water dish is are things to do as well.

It’s possible they are drinking, you just aren’t seeing it, check the water for mess, feel their crop for fluids, look at their feces to determine if they are getting fluids.
