he walked behind her on the ramp with his head down. his face scrunched when the sand pelted his raw skin. the wind penetrated through his dirty blonde locks as his body chilled from the sadness. the birds flew over their heads in a quiet manner, heading out towards the ocean. the guilt thickened in the pit of his gut, he felt nauseous; his heart pumped only pain.

you finally turned around, making jai stop short.

“just stop jai, just stop.”

you were defeated, you shoved your shaking hands in your pocket. you watched him stand there with his head hung low. you noticed his nostril flaring as he was biting roughly on his bottom lip. he wanted so badly for the tears to hold back, he was tired of it all.

jai cut the silence, “this isn't your fault.”

you snapped, “what? so you think all of this is your fault?”

“it isn't your fault,” he repeated again, shaking his head.

“do you want me to pity you? i mean come on, jai!”

“two people can’t be the fault to this, y/n−”

your eyes widened, “oh, but it’s perfectly fine to blame yourself, right?”

jai shook his head, “can’t you just listen to me for once?”

“no, can’t you understand? you're not the only one hurting. i see the tears in your eyes when you don't think i’m watching. i hear you pace the house at night when you think i’m sound asleep. you walk around like your dragging these chains−you just ball it all up and then explode when you can’t keep it together. i can't do that!”

the tears pooled from from your lashes. jai kept clenching his teeth.

“i can't do this anymore, y/n. i can't keep trying to help you if you won't even let me talk or stand close to you.”

“i’m going home,” you croaked.

you turned around, leaving jai blank. the tension between the two was like a single thread about to snap. he watched the woman he loved walk away, out of his reach. he couldn't go home yet, he needed to cool down.

the freezing water smacked his bare skin, like a bunch of ice shards. he shivered only once, allowing the water to numb his pain. without a care, he sat down in the water, the foam pushing past him. he removed his raw hands from his hoodie pocket, digging them into wet sand. he closed his eyes, allowing the salty air to pervade his thoughts.
