41. comfort food

They were on a precipice of great change. The Drifter was to charge onwards, while the Operator was to hold back. And so they sat, one across another, slowly eating away at the board of nutrition cubes, like a memory long gone. And it was a memory shared. They were one and the same, a lifetime ago. A child aboard the Zariman with little care in the world.

Now? A creature of the Void and a child of immense loneliness.

The Operator plucked a cube from the tray and placed it in their mouth. The flavour, long forgotten, flooded their senses. A comfort food.

"Just like in my childhood," two voices said at once.
