Lenepveu’s skilful and loathsome series of placards of hate, entitled Le Musée Des Horreurs, deepened the stark divide caused by the Dreyfus Affair. We have a rare entire run of them, contemporaneously annotated by an unknown hand identifying the subjects of caricature and racial stereotyping. The second picture depicts Alfred Dreyfus strangling Marianne the spirit of France, the third most infamously depicts Dreyfusard Zola, author of J’Accuse published in ‘Aurore’. He is shown as a cochon smearing France with ‘Caca’.
