TITLE: Old Post Office and store at Drewsey, Harney County, Oregon, 1960

DESCRIPTION: This is the post office and store of Drewsey in Harney County as seen on September 25, 1960. The wooden building is abandoned then. Abner Robbins started a store here in 1883. He changed the name to Drusy (possibly for a local rancher's daughter) when postal authorities rejected the original name of "Gouge Eye."

From the Harney County Historical Society:
"The future town site of Drewsey was included within the boundaries of the Malheur Reservation, originally established by treaty for the local Paiute population until an influx of settlers and influential stockmen pressured the federal government to rescind the treaty and throw the land open for claim under a series of land acts.
In 1883 Abner Robbins claimed squatter's rights on a parcel of land near the Malheur River later proved up on by Elmore E. Purington, which became the site of Drewsey."

I stare at what I first think are vultures. No. Wild turkeys. I then want a giant glass of whiskey as I snap a pic. The turkeys startle, then flap off. I am left to discover the mythical ranch allegedly that exists along this curvy gravel road on a very hot day.
