I was going to make a post that said āTfw a ship you really like is fine at first but then it gets abusive and everything is terrible (and this isnāt even about anything from any show, this is about two characters of mine and how as I figured out their story further it ended up getting Awful)ā
but then I went āwhy did I do thatā
like why did I make them abusive. like at first I was just ābecause thatās realisticā because theyāre a human and an immortal and among other things the human (accidentally) becomes dependent on the immortal because the immortal (genuinely accidentally) gets the humanās body killed so the human has to live in this body that the immortal made for them and at first it seems cool because oh hey they can share bodies, the immortal can keep making bodies that they can share, they can live inside each otherās heads and read each otherās thoughts and therefore communicate psychically (thatās always cool, I have this odd Interest in characters who are in a relationship and can read each otherās minds, probably because since they can communicate both telepathically and verbally, they can communicate twice as much because they can talk AND send each other thoughts so like Yay Communication and also if one of them has difficulty articulating something they can just drag up the experience in their mind and the other will automatically understand because I write psychic-ness to work like that)
but then I was like āhey...this actually isnāt cool...the immortal already had an extreme power advantage over the human...they got them into a lot of bad situations because they didnāt understand how humans react to things and they werenāt remorseful and even though I was like āthis is non-humans not understanding humansā thatās actually terrible...and now thereās even more of a power imbalance...shit...this is the opposite of cool...this is actually abusive I think...ā
so I ended up making up a character arc where the human is able to escape from the immortal and ends up seeing out another relationship with someone who isnāt perfect but is as good to the human as you could expect that specific person to be (itās an Established Character in that continuity and itās like āok yes with how he acts that would make senseā) but then the human has to go back to the immortal and theyāre terrified to have to go back to them
they end up killing the immortal because they donāt want to live with them (and also the immortal had, in their humanās absence, become an even worse person than they were before) and they end up becoming themself an immortal (a god kinda; the immortal was the closest thing their dimension has to a god and itās a little-known secret that if you kill one of those beings you take their place and take on their title and powers).
I had before then really liked those characters and their relationship and I still like both of those characters (even the abusive one, in the way that I can go āhey thatās an interesting character tbhā) but their relationship is like. Not Cool now. and Iām like ādid I do this because it was realistic or did I do this because I think every relationship ends up abusive and everything is terribleā and I legitimately donāt know the answer
