Writing Tip #34
When writing a story that takes place in a different world, worldbuilding is extremely important. The world shapes the characters, it shapes the customs, it shapes the landscape even. If you do not consider your world building while writing, your story will feel off. There will be details missing or things that seem not quite right. I am not saying you should focus so much on world-building that you never actually sit down and write, but you need to have at least some idea of where your characters grew up and how they were raised before you put pen to paper.
Not that you need to be this detailed, but great examples to help you out are Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. In these stories, you can clearly see how the world the characters are in shapes who they are and what is important to them. Both of these series are full of little details that by themselves seem insignificant, but help to immerse the reader in the world and make the story more believable and therefore far more touching.
