It’s International Women’s Day today, which is a great reason to look at the plight of a member of our cartooning community Atena Farghadani. The Guardian has a concise look at Farghadani’s plight as well as the #Draw4Atena movement, and The Toronto Star has an article today that includes Farghadani as well as many other women whose voices have been silenced as political prisoners. The silencing and censoring of women is also at the forefront of Rokudenashiko’s What Is Obscenity? The Story of a Good for Nothing Artist and her Pussy. Through humour and an indefatigable spirit Rokudenashiko challenges patriarchy even in the face of imprisonment.
