It’s International Women’s Day today, which is a great reason to look at the plight of a member of our cartooning community Atena Farghadani. The Guardian has a concise look at Farghadani’s plight as well as the #Draw4Atena movement, and The Toronto Star has an article today that includes Farghadani as well as many other women whose voices have been silenced as political prisoners. The silencing and censoring of women is also at the forefront of Rokudenashiko’s What Is Obscenity? The Story of a Good for Nothing Artist and her Pussy. Atena Farghadani é uma artista e ativista iraniana, condenada a 12 anos de prisão por postar em sua página do facebook um desenho criticando o estado iraniano. O desenho de Atena mostrava membros do parlamento como animais, num protesto contra os planos do governo de proibir medidas contraceptivas para mulheres.

29-year-old Atena Farghadani is in prison for her art and peaceful activism, after she was found guilty of charges including 'insulting members of parliament through paintings'. In June, Iran sentenced Atena to more than 12 years in prison, after a trial that lasted just half an hour - the only 'evidence' against her extracted under interrogation.
