Hi I was wondering if it would be ok if I could ask you a couple of slightly technical questions on Ebola? I'm doing some research on it and wanted to get as much info as possible so it'd be great if you can :) Why is the Ebola virus glycoprotein a critical component of vaccines? and what type of virus is the Ebola virus? (I know it's in the Filoviridae family but is there anything else to it?)
Ask away!
Well, I'm sure you know the answer to the first question. Let's think about it for a second. Glycoproteins are located on the surface of cells, and are also present on the surface of viruses. Now, the cells in your immune system "see" the surface of bacteria and viruses first, right? They have receptors that sense the stuff on pathogen surfaces such as, you guessed it, glycoproteins. When they sense these bacterial or viral cell-surface components, it alerts them to mount an immune response that includes producing protective antibodies (the goal of a vaccine). Therefore, if you're designing a vaccine to mimic this response, what would you rather have as your main immunogenic component: something on the surface of the pathogen, or something buried deep inside? Something like glycoproteins, of course! So for the one sentence answer to your question as to why glycoprotein of Ebola virus is a critical component of vaccines: It is the pathogenic component of the virus the immune system can recognize and launch a protective immune response to.
You're correct on that second question. If you want to go into more detail, their are 5 species of Ebola viruses (including Zaire ebolavirus aka Ebola virus or EBOV), which are all part of genus Ebolavirus, family Filoviridae, order Mononegavirales, group V (which is comprised of negative single-stranded RNA viruses). Wiki has a nice page on virus classification if you want to learn more.
I hope this helped! Please let me know if you have any more questions because I'm always happy to answer them :D
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day :D
Thanks darling! The day has been decent! Thank you for the well wishes! *hugs*

I love your new theme! And I think it's really cool how you changed your profile ever so slightly to go with it :)
Thank you~

Can't we just call them 'Earth sisters' or something?
Sure, though that sounds more as a platonic ship name than a romantic one.
Don't worry I am the queen of daft and so I can share in the number of times I've tried to ask/ answer a question and the teacher made me feel stupider than I actually am :) P.S 'He who asks is a fool for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask is a fool forever' - Chinese proverb.
But honestly, they really shouldn't! They're being paid to educate and make people understand. Regardless if they know the subject like the back of their hand, they shouldn't make it sound like everyone should know it and they shouldn't be rude about it either. I'm sorry your teacher made you feel stupid too. That's so awful. :(
