#drail

after years of getting random intense urges to design the cast of firebringer and draw up scenes from the book i’m finally getting around to it, starting with color palettes. the first six are the main cast, two after are the main character’s bio parents, then the four does are the first four guys’ moms, and finally the two villains and a nice old dude who dies on page two. i forgot the old doe who’s really chill and i love her, but otherwise this is the main red deer cast.

I present, ~Corn~

Corn is a Drail, or as she and her kin would say, One Born of Dragonscale. One of these days I’ll make little profiles of the 5 or 6 different races that inhabit The Mind at Heart’s world, but for the moment have a few fun facts:

Drail believe themselves to be descendants of dragons. Their faith is actually based around this concept.

Depending on an individual’s heritage and the traditional range of their particular group’s original geographical location, certain things like patterns, horns, tails, colours and scale types may vary widely.

They can’t actually speak the common language, Galère, because they physically can not produce most of the sounds necessary. However, they’ve adapted to use a simplified version of their ancient tongue that most other races can easily pick up and understand.

The original language is called the Tongue of Teeth, and is comprised of a wide, complex variety of clicks, chirps, shrills, hisses, whistles, clucks and more. It allows two Drail to have a very detailed conversation very quickly.

The modern version does not include any of the subtleties and puts a greater emphasis on the louder, more defined clicks, clucks, hisses and the like.

Deriving from this, oftentimes an individual will pick up a nickname that is really just how their actual name sounds in Galère.

Corn’s real name, translated, means something along the lines of ‘existential dread the third’

Drail are the amazing merchants of the world and can be found trading everything everywhere. While they prefer the warm, they will go to the poles if the trip is worth it.
