So today I went to see the new Godzilla film. Although it wasn't in 3D, the speacial effects helped to give the film the closest thing to a 3D experience as possible without wearing the glasses. And like other large production films that came out within the last 2-3 years, the speacial effects are phenomenally well done and give a degree of realism to the movie. Even Godzilla and the other monsters look real (well as real as giant lizard things and bats from hell CAN look) with nicely textured skin and flesh that jiggles with movement. The protagonist was portrayed well and was easy to relate with or understand as you could almost feel what he was going through as well as the other characters.
Being a relatively new Godzilla fan, I don't know all about about the franchise's history. I only know certain aspects such as that he can breathe fire- or whatever that's called- and that he fights either the military or other monsters. But this movie has made me want to watch the old movies and read the Godzilla comics since he didn't look as much like a dragon that you would find in folklore books as he does in the previous reincarnations. It may be that I am also a fan of dinosaurs, but he does look pretty badass. Die hard fans may be excited to know that unlike in the 1998 American version, this Godzilla keeps the ability to breathe that fire breath of his to totally PONE an opponent. I also like the fact that he is not the antagonist like I thought he was going to be, although he was not a "good guy" either. It was nice to see that Godzilla appeared to not want to intentionally harm any humans, such as diving underneath a ship to avoid hitting it, and only went for his intended target (the real antagonists of the film). I was excited throughout the whole film and was almost pumping my fists and cheering every time Godzilla make an appearance. The fighting sequences were awesome to watch. I looked like a gaping fish as I watched these things beat the shit out of each other. A few times I could actually SEE Godzilla going "That's it! *Whack!*". Godzilla's fire in this film actually looks like a blue flame thrower instead of the beam that was used previously.
Over all the movie had a Micheal Bay's Transformers type of feel. A few scences I could have sworn were taken directly from one of the movies or bared a similarity to it. I was half expecting Optimus Prime to just drive in out of nowhere and transform, saying his signature "Autobots rollout!".
Still Godzilla was NOT what I was expecting and was a really good movie and well worth the money. I will probably go see a few more times or buy it the moment it comes out on DVD.
