#Repost @yahblackmanhattan #latepost On this St. Patrick's day, I'm reminded of two Irish men, Decker and Paddy McCaffrey and their efforts in helping orphan children escape for their lives from a vicious mob. During the Draft Riot of 1863 a ruthless mob of several hundred men, women and children broke down the front door with an ax and proceeded to ransack the Colored Orphan Asylum building and set it on fire. The mob stole whatever were in their sights. Thankfully, while the mob was focused on gaining entrance, the superintendent of the Asylum, William E. Davis, and the head matron, Jane McClellan, quietly snuck all 233 children out the back door. As the children were escaping, some of them were surrounded by the angry mob. Fortunately, two Irishman, Decker and Paddy McCaffrey, rescued twenty of the orphan children, as the crowd who gathered around the poor children cried out, "Murder the damned monkeys." Had it not been for the courageous conduct of the two Irish men, there is little doubt that many, and perhaps all of those helpless children, would have been murdered in cold blood.
