Well obviously the big overall thing I donāt like about MtG isĀ āthe people/company who are in charge of itā, but specifically, the thing I hate is the thing Iām pretty sure most of the fandom hates, which is the way that Chandra got force-heteroād in the novel for no reason
Itās not just infuriating that it happened, itās infuriating because it literally invents an entire aspect of the character that has never been discussed previously, and uses the phraseĀ ādistinctly heterosexualā while doing so, exclusively to be likeĀ āno, the gays canāt have anythingā

I feel like conflict doesnāt necessarily have to be a fight. Like, the whole variety of man vs nature, man vs society, man vs self, ect, not all of those are literal conflicts. Grappling with your own self growth can be a conflict. Arguing over ideals can be a conflict. Trying to see as much of the world as possible and dealing with the problem of humans having finite lifespans when you donāt, etc
Well, this is the tack that Iām trying to take with it. Iām looking at this from more of a Ghibli-esque angle and gunning for a more abstract āconflictā, like the types you mention, but somehow I get the feeling that others wonāt see it that way and that my story will be branded āboringā for the lack of a bland, direct enemy for my protagonists to struggle against.
Specifically, they arenāt being pushed into action by a threat to world peace or an impending disaster that threatens to destroy their way of life; they simply discover an injustice that is far too vast in scale to ever affect them or anyone theyāll ever know and decide to correct it because itās the right thing to do. They arenāt going to be rewarded for doing it, and nothing bad will happen to them if they turn around and go home. Itās literally just the right thing to do, and thatās enough for them to want to pursue it with all of their might.
Iām frequently told that the way I write my characters and relationships is very good and that seeing them interact with each other is entertaining in its own right, but will that be good enough for a Real Book? I guess weāll have to see.
HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYYYY
