DR. WALLACE- “Laurel, you were right, you are pregnant. I would say about 8 weeks, and there is something else...”
LAUREL- “Is everything okay?”
DR. WALLACE- “For now, yes, but Laurel, you are carrying twins, I heard two heartbeats. We will need to do an ultrasound to verify, but I am pretty certain there are two in there.”
MILA- “TWINS! Oh, Dr. this is not good. I mean with me being a type 1 diabetic, and insulin dependent, having one child is high risk, having twins certainly would really put my risks higher.”
DR.WALLACE- “Again, you are right. Regardless of who the mother is, any pregnancy is risky. But in your medical condition, it is a higher risk, and with twins, well...”
MILA- “What am I going to do, Doctor. I mean, we were using birth control, and we were not planning on this. I certainly do not want to risk myself, or the babies...I just don’t know what to do.”
DR. WALLACE- “There are alternatives, of course, but we can also monitor you very closely, and will probably have to hospitalize you early on for 24 hour monitoring. Technology and science are on your side. Go home, talk to Eli and the two of you discuss this. call me if you have any questions, or bring him back in with you tomorrow.”
MILA- “So if we monitor me closely, are you saying I may be able to have these babies with no complications?”
DR. WALLACE- “I certainly can not make that promise, Mila, and the chances of No complications at all are pretty slim, but I can do all that I can.You and Eli need to make a decision soon. If we wait too long, it may be too late to do anything....”
MILA- “I understand, I will talk with him today and let you know immediately what we decide.”
