Was thinking about dōjutsu from Naruto again, as one does, and I thought, “Does each tomoe in a Sharingan have it’s own fovea*?” Google reported that birds have more than one fovea per eye: one for binocular focus and one for peripheral vision.
So while I’m now pretty sure Sharingan don’t, Byakugan do. (Caged “Bird” indeed. Though I feel like that one might have been more for the bird cage/Tanabata implications than the biology.) Speaking of birds, it’s possible that Hyuuga are able to see chakra so well because they also share the avian adaptation of being tetrachromats.**
Unfortunately, this means that polycoria*** is looking more and more likely as an IRL biological method for tomoe formation. If it is polycoria, then are the tomoe always there but only visible when chakra is channeled into the eye? Or maybe the tomoe are actually just where the pigment goes when the rest of the iris turns red- and the hypnotic eye is actually a movement thing where seals are being formed? Do they have red tapetum lucidum instead of pigment being stripped away?
@odditiesinnaruto Any thoughts?
* Fovea: the portion of the eye in the center of the retina (where light focuses) that has the densest amount of cones and thus the sharpest vision
** Tetrachromacy: having four (4) sets of cones, rather than the human standard three (3), thereby being able to see more wavelengths on the spectrum of light than the 400 - 700 nm portion humans typically observe
*** Polycoria: when there are tears in the iris that lead to the formation of one (1) or more extra pupils. People with this condition tend to be photosensitive and/or have blurred, dimmed or doubled vision. (Don’t google this unless body horror doesn’t freak you out. I found it mildly creepy and my mom freaked out completely when she saw what I was looking at, so.)
"Lineage".
I HAD A THOUGHT
so the sharingan requires eye contact for the genjutsu to work, right?
autistic eye contact-adverse uchiha
Did Sasuke lose Susanno when he lost his Rinnengan? I could've sworn that was just a regular thing he could do with whatever that final level of Sharigan was before Rinnengan. Like Itachi had one too & he didn't have Rinnengan.
Well, if I recall correctly, while a Sharingan user only needs the “standard” Mangekyou Sharingan in order to use Susanoo, they need both eyes to activate the jutsu (hence why Kakashi couldn’t use Susanoo until Obito temporarily “lent” him the two Sharingan eyes). So, in theory, while Sasuke would still be able to use Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi with his remaining eye, he wouldn’t be able to use Susanoo anymore.
Granted, it’s entirely possible I’m misremembering this (it’s been a long time after all), and maybe he only needs one eye to use the technique (or possibly the two eyes are only needed to summon the complete/“perfect” version of Susanoo and he still can use the incomplete skeletal form).

Doujutsu
Just a little sketches while watching Boruto last night! 💪
Which one do you prefer? Jougan or Sharingan? 🙂
Hey, so I'm working on a story and I was hoping for some advice. I'm trying to make a group of four all have dojutsus, and one is going to be related to the senju so I need a dojutdu that matches them but I can't think of one. I was wondering if you had any ideas? If not thats fine, I just love your analysis's and thought you might have a good one
I’ve often thought that there should be more doujutsu in Naruto for the simple reason that the series makes a big deal fairly early about there being a doujutsu category, but as the series progresses it basically becomes that the Sharingan and its upgrades can do All The Things to a broken extent.
Kishimoto frequently gives characters unnatural eyes. Many characters lack pupils, and then you have Kakuzu and his weird colour scheme. And the way the Aburame hide their eyes. So that makes me feel like more doujutsu is really a missed opportunity.
You’d want an arresting, but easily described through text, appearance for your new doujutsu. Senju means “thousand hands”. Some ideas off the top of my head:
Some form of telekinesis of things the user can see (ie that they can use their eyes as “hands” to manipulate things)
Some kind of healing power, perhaps related to the Cintamani which is associated with Kannon the Thousand Handed (Guanyin)
Or ability to see spirits/magical beings of some kind
LASER BEAMS because why not
For a design:
A sun or ray pattern
A floral or lotus pattern
The user closes the eyes to use the power… perhaps the eyes glow from behind the lids
A hand or palm pattern
A vajra pattern (resembles the Senju crest)
Multiple pupils or a compound eye (this is one headcanon I like for the Aburame)
Anyone can feel free to use any of these ideas, no credit necessary. Also welcome to chime in with more ideas.
