DECODE PROP
The second machine-born font in the Process Zine archive. This one comes from the OKI ML3320 dot matrix printer, set to its proportional spacing mode.
Every character was printed in UTL (Utility), then scanned and redrawn — keeping the dot-grid texture, the uneven alignments, and the soft edges of impact.
The result isn’t a smooth re-interpretation but a document of output, a record of signal shaped by pins and ribbon.
The DECODE family was originally intended to include multiple pitch widths (10, 12, 15, 17, 20 CPI). But proportional felt like the most alive version to start with: less rigid, more like speech, more like interference.
Next in line is TIPPA_ECHO — a typewriter-derived set (likely in pre and post ribbon states).
Second Copy — Misrecogniser: First Full Test
Tonight’s Xcode build pushed a full image-to-label print with automatic logo watermarking. From desktop → selection → live preview → thermal transfer — straight into the dot-matrix aesthetic.

The past couple of days have been spent deep in the printer pits—pushing ASCII faces through two wildly different output systems: the OKI ML3320 dot matrix and the Epson TM-T20II thermal receipt printer.
What began as a simple attempt to print text-based expressions soon spiralled into a full-on glitch ritual. Both printers responded in ways that mirrored the very themes of Process Zine and The Interpreter project: delay, misfire, miscommunication, and aesthetic artefacting.
1. Initial Trials Starting with raw .txt files formatted in a strict 80x24 grid, I fed them into the dot matrix printer expecting neat, aligned character output. Instead, it produced garbled, recursive glyphs—ASCII diacritics looping into their own misinterpretations. A visual echo of auditory processing disorder.
2. Thermal Progress The thermal printer was next. At first, direct ASCII output was equally chaotic, with characters corrupted or dropped. So I pivoted to a rasterised image approach: using python-escpos and Pillow to render each expression as an image and then rotate it 90° for vertical alignment. This not only created cleaner output but gave each face room to breathe on the paper roll.
3. Standardisation To ensure consistent rendering across all expressions, I:
– Trimmed each expression to remove unnecessary top/bottom spacing – Standardised each file to 16 character lines in height – Adjusted font sizes in the script to scale with face proportions – Built a fallback system where thermal printing could be triggered from command line with face.sh 0xx print
4. Outcomes
Dot matrix: glitch-heavy, unreadable at times, but conceptually perfect for communicating “interpretation error.”
Thermal: clean, sharp, and aligned. Faces rotate out like a sideways captioning system—clear but still filtered through machine logic.

What emerged is more than technical success. It’s a self-portrait of communication breakdown—each printout a timestamped snapshot of what happens when signal meets noise, when language meets latency.

What began as a stubborn act of compatibility — trying to get a 1980s OKI ML3320 dot matrix printer to speak to a modern Mac — turned, inevitably, into something stranger.
MacOS doesn’t expose RAW queues directly, which meant no true passthrough mode, no traditional driver that could handle binary payloads. Only one method worked: ASCII only, via CUPS and Terminal. But that limitation opened the door.
I built a small Automator app — Send to Ezra — that lets me drag any file (PDF, JPG, DOC, whatever), and instead of printing what the file was, Ezra prints what it sounds like. Just the raw bytes — the misheard version.
🧠 An act of auditory processing disorder. 🫥 A facsimile of deafness. 🧾 A captioning of noise.
Every page becomes a glitchy transcript — part metadata, part alien glyph, part digital stutter. Ezra doesn't reproduce the file. He interprets it. Badly. And sometimes beautifully.
Each print is mirrored to a .txt log — a record of mistranslation — before it's fed to the ribbon. What was supposed to be a pure signal becomes a textured noise. In this, Ezra echoes the entire premise of Signal // Noise — the breakdown between intention and reception. The shape of meaning in the misfire.
Ezra prints pure signal again. But the signal was never pure. The silence was never empty. The caption always lags.
