‘Into the SpiderVerse’ (2018)

These special edition posters for ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ (2018) use complimentary pinks and blues to create a warm night light and the bright white of the moon creates an emphasis on Miles, therefore making him stand out among the rest of the characters and background.


In the bottom example the slight contrast of the bright green and slight reds puts emphasis on the characters as their red suits allow them to stand out against the background.

‘twentyonepilots’ (2009) 

The clever use of colour in twentyonepilots self-titled 2009 album cover by John Rettstatt represents creativity seeping out of one’s mind among their seemingly monotone surroundings.


The cover can be interpreted as many different things however I see it as the person’s thoughts bringing colour to the world around them due to the bright colours bringing life to the cover. 


When thinking of contemporary design where colour is the dominant principle, the artwork for Nothing But Thieves’ ‘Real Love Song’ and ‘Is Everybody Going Crazy?’ singles came to mind. 

Attention is immediately drawn to the images rather than the text because of the use of complimentary colours, even when the text is in the centre of the page instead of pushed out to the edges. I think that using the same colours reversed for the different artworks was a clever idea, keeping a theme but also keeping them separate.
