“Pop Shop IV” Keith Haring (1989)

Keith Haring was a prominent figure of the Pop Art movement, who was active from the late 70s until his death in early 1990 (aged 31). His friendship with fellow graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat saw him develop his own graffiti-art style, with it’s bold outlines of figures and animals, alongside the simple, vibrant block colours saw him rise to fame and led to him undertaking larger projects such as commissioned murals and collaboration with pop art Icons such as Andy Warhol. Haring often used his artwork as a vessel to address issues such as homosexuality, safe sex and AIDS. I was inspired by his seemingly simple, bold colour schemes, as they really drew attention to his pieces.

Nick Flook is a Canadian artist, who works exclusively through Acrylic paint, which he uses to create mainly surrealistic Art pieces. One of the main things I noticed when I first discovered him is his use of colour in his pieces, which is shown in the above pieces. These two pieces I have selected both use a similar Analogous colour scheme of Red and Blue, to create vast, surreal environments, which I think have quite a calming effect on the viewer.

Jason Anderson is an English artist, who’s abstract oil paintings of landscapes are inspired by the techniques he developed whilst working with stained and painted glass at the start of his art career. Most of his artworks are created using very strong colour palettes, with the paint being applied in thick impasto sections, which create their own detail and form.

The complimentary colours in this piece of artwork really pop the green and red really being the most important for giving contrast between the shapes.Its interesting and fun to look at.

                    “Anatomy Of A Murder”-1959

Saul Bass had a unique technic when it came to designing, what was great about it was that it was dependent on colour to be strong. This meant that he had a unique approach to colour. for instance this poster for the 1959 movie “ Anatomy Of A Murder” it could still be a strong piece without the colour. but by adding the red it gives the whole poster a new meaning, the red could be symbolism for blood or danger. that is what i like about this poster as it the background colour was blue it would lose all its strength. Bass effectively used colour to set the mood of the film. with a composition as simple as that it is.

One thing Bass is really good at is using colour in small amounts, which is very effective in bringing attention to certain areas, especially when the rest of the composition is simple and calm. this is also great because it also creates depth.

I really like this book cover Bass done, it follows his signature blank background and coloured focal point but in this case the flow of the colour creates a path for the eye to follow, eventually making its ways to the finger.

in those 3 examples it is shown how versatile Bass was when it came to using colour even though he had his own recognisable method. his use of colour was thought provoking, eye catching and very much so mood inducing.

Audrey Flack is a genius when it comes to photo-realisim, her ability to carefully balance her often times busy composition is truly captivating. among all the brilliant techniques used by her, one that sticks out to me most is her use of colour. working with photo-realism -among other things- there is no surprise she is efficient with her use of colour, but Flack takes it a bit further.

In most of her photo-realism work Flack uses ‘Vanitas’ which is symbolism in art that shows the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. one way does is through the addition of a skull in “Wheel of Fortune”. but thats a story for another blog.

That being said i think her constant use of the colour red could be a vanitas as well as the colour is often connoted with danger and death. especially on “Marilyn (vanitas)” as the colour red is too prominent. the compost seems like it is a shrine to late idol Marilyn Monroe which emphasises the ideal of red connoting danger and death.

all in all i like the way Flack uses colour because of how she composes it, she could fill a whole canvas with red and it would be greatly balanced and not too overpowering as shown in almost all her photo-realism pieces.
