Dot Hack//G.U. Last Recode Vol. 1: Rebirth- Part 20: The Title Match
A short gripe about Dot Hack G.U.
So I watched Roots (the prequel anime) way back when and there is such a massive difference between that and G.U. that it’s jarring.
Case in point: Outside life, while pretty much never seen, is constantly mentioned in Roots. Characters leave for other games, have to log out for the day, ages are talked about, visiting each other in real life. Ages in particular are actually a huge sticking point for me in this series.
G.U. pretty much never talks about life outside the game unless ii directly relates to events going on in it. Maybe this is the let the player feel like they’re the ones behind Haseo, but he’s already such a fully formed character that it would basically be pointless. The most noticable way this manifests is that G.U. actively ignores what the player ages are supposed to be. For the most part this is fine, I get it. But there are some characters (Yata and Sakaki specifically) that I simply don’t believe.
Yata’s supposed to be in a position of power overseeing essentially a black op going on inside the game orchesterated by the game company. He’s 17.
Sakaki is apparently an incredibly high-leveled player, master class manipulator, in a leadership position in one of the game’s largest guilds, lords over the other leaders, is slowly taking over the guild from it’s top leader through subterfuge, the list goes on. He’s 10. Fucking 10.
I don’t get it.
“It’s not just a game...”
