Changing My Entire Career Plan - Austin Nguyen

I am going to spill the tea on how I completely changed my future career plans. This summer I made the decision to drop pre-med and completely change my major and minor along with my career goal. 

Last year I was studying Neuroscience and was on the pre-med track, and I was honestly really determined to pursue the medical field and become a doctor. Freshman year was totally fine; I did well in most of my classes, and I had a perfect schedule planned for Fall Semester 2018. My life was set and put together.

Before summer began I was scrambling to find an internship or job opportunity and ended up settling on doing research here at USC. One day while in the lab, I had a sudden realization that I no longer wanted to pursue the medical field, and that is when I started freaking out about my entire life. I truly just sat there internally freaking out about what I want to do with my life. After a couple of minutes I calmed down and realized a great career option would be health care administration/management. Long story short, I was able to clear my already-made schedule and create an entirely new one that worked out perfectly.

So now I am a Health and Human Sciences major with a minor in Health Administration, and I feel so happy. I am really glad I made that change, and I am so excited for what the future has in store for me. 

The whole point of this story was for me to ramble about my life and also to provide a personal experience of being stuck and being lost for a little bit. Some people have no idea what they want to do in the future, and that is completely fine. There is so much time to experiment with things you are interested in while at USC, and there are so many major, career, and life options to choose from. I did not love the idea of pursuing the medical field any longer and that is why I dropped it, but now I am absolutely loving the health policy classes I am in, and I couldn’t be happier.
