TW for mentions of self harm and drugs (ONLY in my analysis)
Dopamine_machine is an amazing digital rock song by Ferry made for the album Big Alliance, an anniversary album for none other than Big Al! I think Big Al is a super underutilised Vocaloid in a desert of deep voiced synths despite his... interesting reputation, and I absolutely love the deep robotic tuning Ferry uses for him in this song! According to Ferry, this song is simply a rhyming exercise with no deeper meaning, but as the YouTube comments say 'Ferry? With no deeper meaning? I severely doubt it' and there is a lot of meaning you can garner from the lyrics, so I'll take it line by line!
Evening comes and you pull out your hidden razor, you're engulfed and lose your vision in the haze of dopamine
Immediately I think self harm, which can cause a rush of dopamine, and might be something you wanna keep "hidden". This pairs with the title itself, a 'dopamine machine' being something that produces dopamine, perhaps in large quantities or constantly, so perhaps someone who self harms often or regularly
You look at me and see a face of somebody, another somebody, you look afraid
Hmm, initially I wasn't sure of this. The second character in the MV (and the speaker in the song) is some sort of demonic entity based on the horns and the fangs and the RED, and Ferry sure does seem to love encounters with otherworldly or eldritch beings! But why would you be seeing a demon? Perhaps because of some sort of guilt? My second thought is hallucination, Which doesn't pair well with the idea I had before of self harm, unless it came with some other mental health issue that caused hallucinating, but the next lines assist this line in getting a meaning
Have your barricades really decayed? You're running lemonade at 36° centigrade
VERY KEY LINE! Initially this is like a "huh? Lemonade? What the hell is this about?? That's so funny" moment, but it changes the meaning you can glean from the song. Immediately, 36°C (96.8°F for you Americans) is the internal temperature of the human body, so this lemonade is something in the body. But what on earth is this "lemonade" stuff? According to the urban dictionary, lemonade is a slang term for liquid hydrocodone, a semi synthetic opioid that's used medically as a painkiller or to treat coughs, but is also used recreationally as a drug and is highly addictive! This would make sense in terms of both hallucinating and dopamine production. According to Wiktionary, it can also just mean "recreational drugs of poor or weak quality, especially heroin". So basically, an opiate drug used recreationally. I think the second meaning makes more sense when paired with the idea of having adverse effects like hallucination, as well as the razor lyric prior, maybe referencing it being "cut" with other substances?? Initially I wasn't sure about the barricade bit, but then I thought (afaik) stuff like hallucination is more common as a withdrawal symptom. So perhaps the character is a recovering addict who has caved and taken heroin because of the bad withdrawal symptoms, therefore his "barricade" (drug use) hasn't really "decayed" because he's back to "running lemonade".
Inside your lemon veins, and your heart's a lemon grenade
Just reinforces my preference for the meaning of lemonade being poor quality drugs rather than specifically the cough syrup one, because heroin is most commonly injected. The second line perhaps refers to the fact he runs off of/is reliant on the drugs, or that he's so far gone in his addiction it's taking over his whole body? Or more straightforwardly, it's just about the negative cardiovascular effects from drugs lol
You think I'm playing charades, masquerade, but this machine just needs an upgrade
I'm guessing the (dopamine) "machine" that needs upgrading is the human body, as taking drugs would upgrade it as a dopamine producer. I truly have no clue about the charades masquerade stuff considering it's the demonic entity speaking and not the drug taker. If it were, I'd guess perhaps it's about playing off or hiding the drug use from others
In your dreams, you see yourself forever weaving holy webs, you wake up looking at the ceiling
Now I'm really lost. God maybe it's uh the drugs/drug withdrawal creeping into his dreams?? So dreaming of stuff like delusions of power. Psychological effects like this would tie in more with the 'overcoming withdrawal' interpretation, and delusions would tie in well with the idea of hallucinating a demon. Heroin induced psychosis is more likely to happen with heroin mixed with other substances too, pairing with the understanding of "lemonade" as slang, god I'm too good/s. I'm now seeing that both if these are religion orientated delusions, so perhaps the guilt idea was also right
Dopamine is coursing through your head and leaving emptiness, it's leaving emptiness, you feel betrayed
I suppose the moral here being that drugs aren't gonna fix your problems kids! Don't do drugs!
Oh, I hate to rain on your parade, but as you know, disasters often come in great cavalcades
Hmm. The demon is "raining on his parade", so I guess he thought drugs would be a good time and a fix, but they were worse than he expected. The line about disasters coming in cavalcades works with my guilt idea from before, using drugs to escape something bad he did or happened in his life, so the bad reaction/struggles with withdrawal/addiction in general is just another "disaster" to add to the long line of disasters that led to this point in the first place
Your mind begins to fade, thought that you were made in the shade?
I can only assume passing out or dying. "Made in the shade" means to have an easy life or situation. Wow I really worked this out well. This reinforces the bad situation stuff, perhaps suggesting things were going well before disaster suddenly struck.
Neither a serenade, nor a tirade-the melody of your cascade
Perhaps I'm just blinded by my interpretation thus far, but I'd take "cascade" here to mean a rapid fall, no? Serenade and tirade are opposite positive and negative sounds, so this guy's rapid fall from grace is neither good nor bad, it just is-its just life.
-Chorus repeats-
Oh, this isn't the end, hold my hand, there is no need to play these games and pretend all is lost, take it from me, this voice in your head
I. Hmm. Not the end. So either, (in the event he's dying from a bad dose) someone's come to help him, or (in the event he's withdrawn/suffering psychosis from a bad dose) he's being comforted, and the hallucination is acting like. As a voice for the person? Like because of the psychological effects he's understanding the world differently, and so the voice of the person is coming from the demon hallucination. Either that or it's his mind's last ditch attempt at self comfort, having the hallucination tell him it'll be ok. But the line about taking it from the voice in his head suggests he recognises that he's hallucinating/experiencing delusion, or perhaps this is a longer running issue due to drug use/mental health issues
Nurture that monster under your bed, and feel the taste of lead again my friend
A monster under the bed may refer to a childish fear, something that doesn't make sense or is nonsensical. Nurturing it I'm not too sure about. Perhaps acknowledge it and let it grow, but I'm truly not sure why. Taste of lead could mean a lot of things. Medically, multiple drugs might cause a lead taste as a side effect, most notably in the case of this song, some antidepressants may cause this. So in conclusion, drug use and depression/mental health issues as a result of a rapid fall from grace in life, and the subsequent negative effects of this.
And that's it! I hope you enjoyed my haphazard work through of the lyrics of this song, despite the whole exercise being technically pointless as the song means nothing! Yay! And I hope you enjoy the song itself if you give it a listen :p
Hey does un-liking and re-liking a post send a notification to the person who reblogged it? I need to know so I can supply my internet friends with more stimulation from The Dopamine Machine(tm)
