rrts are the militarised division of starfleet's section 31. leonard "bones" grimm-mccoy was a marine medic with them until deciding not to re-enlist and instead go to medical school and join the more civilian side of starfleet. a classified section of his files still lists him as an rrts reservist, in occasions where the need for rrts would override the need for an exploration ship to need it's cmo.

Here's an idea for Y'all 🤔 what if in order to pay for medical school Bones joined the Fleet Marines. He took courses virtually(Top of his class of course) as he served and met his wife that way as well. After something horrible happens McCoy requests to be moved over to the other side of the Fleet. The same year he and his wife divorced.

Before meeting Jim on that shuttle Leo McCoy was a decent soldier. He naturally didn't like the needless violence and was called out on it all the time. But he ended up being placed on one of the best teams in the Fleet due to his skill as a sharpshooter. A team that didn't officially exist. It was all something that he wanted to keep in the past. But unfortunately for him, it doesn't work that way.

Half baked idea that hinges more so on before AOS Into Darkness and also keeps Doom plot the same with Reaper:

Admiral Marcus, upon controlling the SS Botany Bay and gaining access to it's data archives, uncovers information that the ship had collected while travelling. In particular, files and reports on genetics and portals from Olduvai on Mars were gained from what little was left or before it was completely destroyed. What the files give info on is C24 but it's all useless without actual samples.

In Olduvai files, Marcus makes Khan dig deeper and a security video is found. The heavily distorted videos show the destruction and slaughter from the monsters, but also bits from the RRTS fight with Sarge, then some of the audio gives more info on a scientist named Sam injecting a fatally wounded marine John with C24. None of the remaining videos or reports give quality pictures of what these two look like.

Marcus' next research dig in old Starfleet archives finds that the only survivors of Olduvai were siblings Samantha and John Grimm. Further, all information on the Grimm siblings before the Olduvai incident were wiped and afterwards they immediately disappeared.

With persistence and connections, Marcus discovers that Samantha Grimm had changed her family name to McCoy. She settled in Georgia, America and continued with agricultural genetic research to stay on the down low. All records of John Grimm vanished.

The McCoy estate is a mix of relatives, their spouses, and folks adopted into the McCoy family when they were kids (a long standing tradition since the start [Sam never married or had kids, and John brought home strays]), and that none of them are actually blood related to Sam Grimm/ McCoy. No info is found on John or his offspring.

Khan finds that every few decades theres a pic or vid with a dark haired man in the background or turned away. Except one very old short video saved and locked away in a file designated For John. An older woman and a younger man are in the video. Comparing to family records, Khan knows that John is unaging and most likely still around.

Then he finds one of the most recent McCoy lot joined Starfleet, signed on from one Christopher Pike who had been fostered at the McCoy estate long ago. The newest recruit, a spitting image of John? Leonard Horatio McCoy.
