Despite being a traditionalist himself, I think Father Frederick is actually the one most knowledgeable about why the SSPX is such a problem for the Catholic Church as a whole, and he has a deep disdain for it and its refusal to submit to the Vatican. He would say they brought it upon themselves, that their actions were knowingly schismatic despite being given so many chances by the Holy See.

But onto the question I have two ish? I think it's two.

First one is about Mary, she seems like a sweet young woman and also seems to be quite knowledgeable. I was wondering if she had any hobbies growing up in her life? She seemed like an active person so I figured that she probably had multiple hobbies like maybe reading or painting I suppose?

Second one is about Father Jonas. Now, since I've relisten to the first ep multiple times and there are always new details and small stuff that I never noticed before, this one specifically to Jonas. Does he, tend to zone out or like, Blank Out in his mind often? Like he does it at least twice or three times in the pilot/first ep, at first I didn't think it was weird but now I'm getting suspicious and curious I would say. So does Jonas do that thing often? It's when he just seems like to pause and stare at something unblinking while he talks long sentences and when someone catches his attention, that's when he breaks that blank stare into the distance, ngl it kinda creeped me out a little hahah (maybe I shouldn't have listened to it at 3am)

So yeah those are my questions :)

For the first question:

Mary was very isolated growing up, partly because of her upbringing and partly because her personality is a bit muted. She's very religious because she was raised that way and it tended to put other people off. She's a bit like Carrie (Stephen King) but less unpleasant to be around, but she wasn't exactly given all the tools to succeed socially. For hobbies, she definitely had many, though mostly through lessons her parents paid for. Anything that they could pay someone to come to the house to teach her or things that were more specialized. Music lessons (piano, singing, etc), painting, horseback riding, golf, tennis. Rich people activities. When she was left bored at home during her Father's trips and her mother not paying too much attention to her, Gordon taught her how to garden and process meat and even shoot a gun once (which was very overwhelming yet exciting for her), and Fides taught her how to clean, sew and cook, to give her some practical knowledge for if she would ever live on her own (if she ever had the opportunity). Her mother would have guests over but usually spent time drunk or doing her own thing, while her father was either too overbearing or too absent depending on the week. When Mary lived in the city for college she didn't make too many friends, but her hobbies usually involved walking around the city parks and gardens, going to church, and reading. She also liked visiting churches and museums and drawing or painting the religious art there.

For the Father Jonas question:

This was a tough one! I think there are many answers to the music genre answer, but I can mention at least one of each they would listen to:

Frederick is the easiest; classical music. He specifically avoids love songs; a sore spot for him. Olujimi is a little harder, because I think when he works he'll play a bit of soft jazz or bossa nova, but if he really wants to just listen to music he'll pull out his favourite New York rap from the 80s and early 90s which he used to try and emulate growing up in London, rapping with friends in Covent Garden (something his VA used to do, fun fact). I think he enjoys a silly modern girlypop song or two when his parishioners introduce them to him, but doesn't seek them out himself. They WILL get stuck in his head, though, and you'll hear him humming them in the church halls. Jonas would love the OPM he grew up with, the Pinoy Rock and Rap and Ballads from the 80s and 90s. He'd have listened to whatever was on the radio at the time. He also probably has a soft spot for the music his Nanay enjoyed, a bit of OPM disco from the 70s. He would also enjoy pop songs from queer icons, though there would be some overlap with "things he hears on the radio while he's working".

As for their clothing:

It freaks Jonas out. He may be the least religious of the three (which means he's way more religious than the average person, as a priest, but still), but he's very superstitious. He's also very easily scared of supernatural horror movies.

Real things don't scare him much, but movie ghosts make him hide behind a pillow.

Olu isn't very superstitious but he doesn't like violence, and he feels more sad about Regan than scared of the film. He's definitely disturbed by it, however, less from the demon and more from the little girl suffering.

Frederick is disturbed by it and does a little bit of religious pearlclutching around horror movies in general, but he does like that it has men of God triumphing over evil (even if those men of God die violently). Once he gets over being offended and disturbed, he likes to nitpick factual errors in movies or discuss tiny details about them. He's a big ol' nerd about anything, including movies, and he vacillates between being really insightful and really annoying about them.

In the case of the Exorcist, he probably criticizes using Pazuzu, a Babylonian figure, in the story when there are so many named Christian demons that would be more appropriate. Despite his conservative values and stringent Catholic belief, Frederick respects history and academia a lot and doesn't really like historical inaccuracy.
