Made in New York Designer: Nonoo
Misha Nonoo knew from the beginning that she wanted to design and produce her collection, locally, in New York. Not only does she believe in the idea of supporting her local economy, but also in the importance of quality. Only in New York, where she lives and works, would she have the quality control to oversee every step of the production process. Little did she know she would fall into the arms of a sweet deal... a factory willing to devote their efforts exclusively to her line. They formed a strong partnership, one where both parties agreed in the importance of hand-tailored fashion. The rest is history.
The Nonoo brand offers women an advanced contemporary product, with an attractive price point. The line is sophisticated, timeless and cool, with European inflected accents. She focuses on fit and superior fabrics. Worth pointing out, Misha has made a point of keeping her margins low, initially, offering woman a lot more for less. She relalizes that she must captivate her consumer with great clothes and reap the rewards in time, as her brand grows. As this happens, the collection will have a more broad offering and as production ramps up her cost of goods will drop. A girl after my own heart! It is always validating when another shares your same point of view. She is well on her way to achieving this kind of success, as she just received the 2012 Rising Star Award for Women's Ready-to-Wear.
We chatted briefly, the day of the awards, in between photos and speeches, and I had the chance to speak with her about her aunt.
I bring this up because her aunt is an outstanding woman worth mentioning. I had the pleasure of meeting her at an event about a year ago and immediately made the connection of her name to the brand Nonoo, when a colleague at a Krug dinner party, mentioned it.
Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nonoo is the Bahraini Ambassador to the United States. As if this is not achievement enough, she is the first Jewish Ambassador of any Arab country and the first female Bahraini Ambassador to the United States. Her appointment made headlines because Bahrain's Jewish community reportedly consists of just thirty-seven people! One of my proudest moments, being a woman entrepreneur, was when she admired and purchased one of my bags.
I would imagine having such a remarkable woman in your life, serves as an awesome source of inspiration and a great motivator for success.
