rewatching goblin (aka guardian: the lonely and great god) may have been the best decision i’ve made this year.
when you know what’s going to happen, you get to look out for all the ways the events are foreshadowed - and goblin does it so perfectly, much like how the final scene was actually shown in the very first episode. initially, i was rather annoyed with the open ending because we never got to see eun tak and kim shin actually happy without the immanent threat of death but after rewatching, it felt like the perfect ending. the grim reaper x sunny wrap-up was also great, finally getting their ‘happy ending’ during their second run. honestly, the writing is just so fantastic i can’t stop thinking about it.
the only teeny tiny quibble i have is what happened to deokhwa? like we know what happened to the ceo that replaced deokhwa’s grandfather, but what actually happened to deokhwa? running the company? married with three kids? who knows. he was such an important part of the rest of the story that it feels rather weird to not know how his life went during those thirty years. but that’s a minor complaint and in no way overshadows everything i find great about this drama.
i really do have to praise the writing here. the way this story was told was absolutely incredible; the romance, poetry, comedy, tragedy and suspense all supplemented by stunning visuals and a beautiful original soundtrack (pun intended), really just makes this one of the, if not the, best things i’ve ever watched.
