Jokes on them of course. Helen bought Daisy for John as a sneaky sort of emotional support animal before they'd even thought about moving in together. She's been extremely helpful in making sure that John isn't alone and has a reason to take care of himself during depressive episodes plus she was trained to know how to handle it when John's PTSD flares up badly.

John on the other hand saw the pitbull during one of Daisy's checks up. He took one look at the intimidating thing(it was covered in scars and was probably used in a fighting ring) and it's sad soft eyes and immediately knew it was exactly the kind of animal that Helen would be able to rehabilitate in months. That john on some level understood that the dog he brought for Helen to save was basically a furry version of himself went without saying. Seeing as the dog was slated to be put down, John expected to have break into the vets overnight and steal it and was in fact planning something to that effect. When Daisy, her check up finished and another clean bill of health on her file, ran right up to the cage and started making friends with the bigger dog without so much as a by your leave. Before he knew it John found himself quietly chatting with the assistant about the dog and why it was being put down (it was indeed part of a fighting ring as well as being used by some thugs in their business). 'We put him down tommorow', says the assistant quietly with a meaningful look, 'we can't allow him to be adopted, but we're so busy, if he finds himself outside somehow and makes his way to a good home...'. And that my friends is how John Wick found himself smuggling the most important package of his life outside of a vet clinic in broad daylight, a wiggling package at that. For once not a single person was shot during one of John's missions, though it was a close call at one point.

Anyway as for the dog, within a few months hes basically a big puppy, he loves fetch and walks and cuddling on the sofa like the big goof he is. The dog adores helen to hell and back and basically acts like a furry bodyguard when he isn't being spoiled rotten with pats and treats and sleeping in Helens bed every night.
