Okay so I've got it figured it out! For Dofus Pets, they key to Brakmarian vs Bontarian is timing. If your pet refuses to do something, look at its stats. Is it in serious need of whatever you're trying to do? I usually work with 50% of a gauge as my general rule, like this. If you're trying to play with your pet and it refuses at low happiness, accepting will make it Brakmarian while forcing it will make it more Bontarian. If you're trying to bathe your pet when it's kinda stinky but not too bad and it refuses, accepting will make it more Bontarian because it doesn't really NEED a bath yet even though that stinky animation is really annoying.
